This publication lists and briefly describes landscape plants that are suitable for the specific site conditions of shady areas. These lists can serve as a guide, but are not intended to be exhaustive. Many other plants may grow well in shady conditions besides the ones on the list.
This publication discusses plant selection, timing, preplant operations, planting instructions, pruning, staking and guying, trunk wrapping, watering, and transplanting of landscape trees and shrubs. Tables are provided listing some slow-to-root trees that should be planted in the spring and some commonly used landscape plants that do not tolerate wet soils. Illustrations are also included showing the preferred and acceptable planting times for nursery stock in central Indiana, the proper planting of a bare-root, balled and burlapped, and container-growth plants in well drained soil, construction of a raised bed on poorly drained soil, the proper planting technique for sandy soil, how to stake and wrap a tree, and the two-year sequence for root pruning and third year transplanting of a tree or shrub.
This publication provides information on the selection, planting, training, and rejuvenation of hedges. Tables are given explaining the landscape plants, which ones may be completely cut back to the ground to rejuvenate, recommended hedge plants, their flowering ability and remarks about the hedge plants. Illustrations are also provided showing how to properly stagger the plants for thick hedges, the correct hedge form, and the first six years of hedge development.
This publication provides descriptions of recommended annual and perennial ornamental vines.
Many homeowners enjoy raising their own fruit, but anyone who has attempted to grow them knows that fruit crops are attacked by a wide variety of insect and disease pests and prone to environmental damage. This publication provides homeowners with the information they need to produce an acceptable amount of quality fruit (apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, grapes, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, currants, gooseberries).
