Global Ambassador: Alžbeta Hájková

Alžbeta graduated from Purdue with a PhD in Philosophy. During her time at Purdue, Alžbeta was mostly interested in social and political philosophy. That means that she concentrated on philosophers that explore notions like best possible forms of political society, the forces behind different political ideologies and regimes, and the relationship between citizens and the rulers.

Why did you choose Purdue?

I chose Purdue because I really liked the Department of Philosophy at this university. There are several excellent faculty members that I was interested in working with.

Career goal?

I would like to be an academic and hopefully also an active member of civil society.

Favorite fact about Purdue?

I like that is in situated in a small friendly town.

Two words that best describe your work?

Thorough and critical thinking

If you have free time, how do you choose to spend it?

I go to COREC or I hang out with my friends.

What apps, software, or tools can’t you live without?

Evernote, SolCalendar, Google Drive

What's your workspace setup like?

I generally prefer working outside of my home, usually in one of the study spaces on campus. If I have to write a paper I go to library, but when I have to do a lot of reading I prefer a comfy armchair at a coffee shop.

What's your best time-saving shortcut or life hack?

Planning my responsibilities in advance and setting a lot of reminders on my phone.

What's your favorite to-do list manager?

Evernote. I use it on a daily basis and it helps me keep track of my tasks and responsibilities.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

I would not say I couldn't live without it, but I recently got a Kindle Paperwhite and it's nice to have all my books on one device wherever I go.

What do you listen to while you work?

I usually prefer silence, but when I reply to emails or do some more routine tasks, I listen to podcasts about politics.

What are you currently reading, or what is the last thing you read (aside from academic reading)?

Exit Right: The People Who Left the Left and Reshaped the American Century, by Daniel Oppenheimer

How do you recharge physically and/or mentally?

By taking walks, doing sports, spending time with my friends.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

To trust in my abilities and not worrying about not being smart enough to do something.
