1. Collegiality in Academy Today

   This piece is based on remarks that were originally prepared for the Roundtable on Collegiality in Higher Education, organized by the Butler Center and held on 02/05/2019. Collegiality is a much-valued quality for faculty today, but can be a difficult concept to codify or practice in today's universities. This essay distinguishes "collegiality" from "good citizenship" or "civility" and builds on James Bess's three-part definition of collegiality to define collegiality as a network of relations. Moreover, the essay links collegiality to fundamental issues of diversity and equity: it proposes a model of "inclusive collegiality" that values the participation of underrepresented minority faculty in bringing transformative perspectives to common issues. In addition, the author suggests strategies for administrators and faculty to foster a collaborative, collegial working culture.

2. Embracing Forks in the Road: One Woman's Journey into Academic Leadership

   In this essay the author reflects on a twenty-five year in the academy as a faculty member and campus leader. Drawing on the concept of “forks in the road,” i.e., decision points in an academic career, the author: 1) elaborates on the fork in the road concept as it has manifested in her own life and career,  2) suggests that academic service may also serve one's career interests if intentional choices are made, and 3) stresses the importance of remaining authentic to yourself no matter what roles you choose to take on during your own career.
