Motorists
Campus travel guidelines
Review Purdue's Traffic and Parking Regulations.
Motorists should respect people on bicycles or electric or motor powered vehicles (EMPVs), be alert to their presence, and observe bicycle lanes and sharrows.
If parking on the street, look before opening your door to avoid potentially hitting a bicyclist, pedestrian or person riding an EMPV.
Anyone traveling on a service drive/access road (on any vehicle) should slow down and proceed with caution. Since this is a shared travel space, cars should yield to people on bicycles or EMPVs in a safe manner, which may include reduced speed, pulling to the side of the access road or stopping.
Parking on bicycle routes is not permitted.
Safety tips
- Treat bicyclists and other vulnerable road users like other motorists (e.g., allow a minimum of three feet of passing distance, respect signals)
- Make eye contact with pedestrians or other vehicle operators when turning
- Obey all traffic signals and signage
