Juanita M. Crider currently works full time as the Program Advisor for the Purdue University Black Cultural Center. She is also a doctoral student in American Studies at Purdue who has completed course work and is preparing for qualifying exams in the summer of 2017. Her research interests are examining representations of aging/elder black females in contemporary black feminist literature, film television and visual culture with special focus on representations of elder sexuality. Her dissertation plans are to use contemporary black feminist literature, film, and television to explore what “spaces” popular culture allows for post- menopausal African American women. She has also researched and presented on youth response to community unrest through the lens of social media focusing on the recent uprisings in Baltimore, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois; and Ferguson, Missouri. She is also currently working on a project exploring representations of elder black women on Pinterest and how these representations are categorized through the site’s search function and the names of boards on the site where the images are featured.

Juanita has presented at several national and international conferences including the National Council of Black Studies, The National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) Conference and the 8th International Conference on Cultural Gerontology at the National University of Ireland in Galway, Ireland and the American Studies Association Conference. She is also a selected member of the NWSA Women of Color Leadership Project 2015 cohort.

Ms. Crider is a native of Baltimore Maryland, where she attended public schools. Her family still resides there so she visits the city at least 2-3 times per year. She earned a B. S. in History from Ball State University and an M.A. in American Studies from Purdue University. She also holds a graduate certificate in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies from Purdue.
