Carpenter named director of student success
May 18, 2015
Dan Carpenter has been named director of student success, effective May 1.
Carpenter had been serving as interim director after succeeding Jared Tippets, who was named vice president for student affairs at Southern Utah University.
Carpenter came to Purdue in 2004 as the Army ROTC department head, his final assignment as an officer in the U.S. Army. He retired from the Army in 2008 as a lieutenant colonel after 22 years of service. Carpenter joined Purdue as an associate director and later senior associate director with what was then called Student Access, Transition and Success (SATS) Programs, where he oversaw orientation programs, learning communities and other transition and success programs. Over the past seven years, he played key roles in, oversaw, and in many cases led the steady, assessment-based improvement of many of Purdue’s highly regarded student success programs.
As director, Carpenter leads orientation programs such as STAR and Boiler Gold Rush, programs supporting first-generation and low-income students such as Purdue Promise, Horizons and 21st Century Scholars, and programs supporting nontraditional students such as the Veterans Success Center and Span Plan Adult Student Services. He also leads programs providing academic enhancements for students such as the Academic Success Center and Supplemental Instruction and Purdue's Testing Center and Disability Resource Center.
