First Purdue Teaching Academy Day set for Sept. 24

September 12, 2014

As part of the effort to make Purdue faculty aware of the network of teaching expertise and resources available to them on the West Lafayette campus, 17 members of the Purdue Teaching Academy will share insights on more than 20 teaching topics on Sept. 24 during the first Purdue Teaching Academy Day.

Concurrent, 20-minute sessions will held from 9 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 218 A-C. Topics will include:

* Integrating community engagement/service-learning and global competency education into classrooms.

* Developing and measuring authentic learning outcomes.

* Linking student learning to career realities.

* Thriving in large classrooms and conducting productive class discussions.

* Problem-based learning and dynamic teaching techniques.

Instructional tools such as Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) and the Purdue Mechanics Freeform Classroom will be discussed, as will special topics such as using fiction in a non-literature class, teaching techniques for students with low vision, and modernizing statistics curriculum in response to student changes.

A full list of topics, presenters and times is available online at www.purdue.edu/cie/teachingacademy/TeachingAcademyDay.html. Each session will be led by a member of the Teaching Academy with experience and expertise on the topic.

All faculty members, teaching assistants and other members of the Purdue community interested in innovations in university teaching are invited to attend the free event. Participants may pick any session or stay for the day.

Teaching Academy Day concludes with the Teaching Academy Induction Ceremony in Purdue Memorial Union's North Ballroom. A reception begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by a ceremony at 7 p.m. to honor the 11 newest Fellows and Associate Fellows nominated and selected for their outstanding achievements and commitment to teaching excellence. An archived Purdue Today story about the inductees is available here.
