Update: W-2 forms to be mailed by Jan. 31

January 16, 2014

Due to weather-related delays, Payroll Services will now mail 2013 W-2 forms by Jan. 31 to all employees' current addresses. The Internal Revenue Service will begin processing tax returns on Jan. 31.

Normally, the IRS begins processing tax returns on Jan. 1, but the 2013 government shutdown delayed software and form updates needed to process 2013 tax returns, Payroll Services says.

Paper and electronic tax returns still may be filed beforehand, but the IRS will not begin to process them until Jan. 31. Filing a paper tax return will not result in a faster refund and processing will still take six to eight weeks.

Additionally, Payroll Services plans to make 1042-S forms available in late February to foreign nationals who received payments in the following categories from Purdue in 2013. The form is necessary for those who:

* Claimed a tax treaty during the 2013 calendar year, or
* Received a scholarship, fellowship, prize, award, human subject, consulting, guest speaker or travel reimbursement payment in 2013.

The 1042-S form will be accessible through the Glacier website at https://www.online-tax.net in late February. Everyone who will receive a 1042-S form will be notified via email when the form is available.
