Trustees committee endorses Teaching and Learning
Excellence road map

The Academic and Student Affairs Committee of the Purdue University Board of Trustees on Tuesday (July 16) endorsed a new road map for the future of undergraduate education at Purdue. The road map, which lays out a framework for moving undergraduate teaching and learning at Purdue to new levels of excellence and impact over the next decade, centers on five themes.

Purdue to kick off celebration of 50th anniversary of
Apollo 11 moon landing

Today (July 18), the “Cradle of Astronauts” and Neil Armstrong’s alma mater will begin its celebration for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Purdue is celebrating with a series of events taking place July 18-20 to commemorate when Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon July 20, 1969. Events include a special space announcement from the College of Engineering, a presentation by Apollo 11’s flight director, showings of a new Armstrong documentary, children’s activities and various panels. Some schedule adjustments are being made due to the forecast of hot weather Saturday.

Leap for Mankind'

“That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind,” echoed from millions of television sets in the late evening of July 20, 1969, as Purdue alumnus Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon. Fifty years ago, Armstrong, along with command module pilot Buzz Aldrin, spent several hours walking on the lunar surface, collecting rocks and photographing the historic event.

It’s become routine during commencement weekends for students, families and friends to line up on Stadium Avenue to snap photos with the Neil Armstrong statue. Purdue is asking people to share their Armstrong statue photos on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and, use the hashtag #TakeGiantLeaps. Purdue is sharing these images as part of its celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
