Physical Facilities supervisor training sessions offered beginning July 11

All supervisors, including those at the crew chief level and above, are encouraged to attend upcoming training sessions offered by Student Life/Physical Facilities Human Resource Specialists. The training program is called "From Hire to Retire and Everything in Between." A brief summary of each session is included below, in addition to the dates, times and locations that they will be held.

Foundations of the Purdue Hiring Process

Supervisors will gain an understanding of how to build a solid hiring process foundation and learn how to partner with Human Resources for a successful search outcome. These sessions are limited to 25 participants, and lunch will be provided.

  • Tuesday, July 11, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; Earhart Dining Court

  • Thursday, July 13, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; Earhart Dining Court

Employee Engagement

This session will outline strategies to enhance employee engagement and will include a facilitated discussion about the concepts presented in the book Lead Simply. Model. Connect. Involve. Employee engagement topics including effective communication and conflict resolution will be discussed. Upon completion, participants will understand how to model the desired behavior, connect with staff and promote staff involvement.

Leaves, FMLA and ADA

This session will include discussion of the "what, when, how and who" of various types of leaves. Supervisors will gain a basic understanding of what leaves are covered, when a supervisor should refer an employee to speak with Human Resources, which direction to point employees in for assistance and who to call when it is unclear. Some unique case studies will be shared allowing supervisors the opportunity to discuss and gain a better understanding of the available leave options.

Progressive Discipline

Supervisors will be equipped with the necessary tools and confidence to successfully address performance concerns when they arise. Supervisors will understand the primary purpose of progressive discipline and explain and apply the University’s guidelines as appropriate in their own areas. The importance of effective employee communication and good documentation will be key components discussed in this training.

Performance Management training will be offered for all Physical Facilities supervisors in August, and additional details will be communicated in the coming weeks.
