What to know about electric scooters, devices on campus
With the academic year underway, Purdue Administrative Operations is reminding the campus community about regulations for electric and motor-powered vehicles (EMPVs), including personal scooters, electric bicycles, skateboards and similar devices.
Purdue’s Traffic and Parking Regulations include requirements for registering, parking, storing and charging EMPVs on campus. Following these guidelines helps keep campus buildings and pathways safe and accessible for everyone.
EMPV users should keep the following requirements in mind:
- Register personally owned EMPVs every two years: To register, bring a photo of the device’s serial number to Parking Operations in Stewart Center, Room G054.
- Keep EMPVs out of university buildings: EMPVs may not be operated, stored or charged inside any university building without written permission from the senior director of Environmental Health and Safety.
- Park in designated locations: EMPVs may only be parked in bicycle racks, bicycle pads or designated EMPV parking areas. New skateboard and scooter parking racks have recently been installed in some locations on campus.
- Use designated garage storage: EMPVs may be stored in U-racks in the Grant Street, Harrison Street and Northwestern Avenue parking garages. Storage in other campus parking garages is not permitted.
- Charge before coming to campus: Those living off campus are encouraged to charge their devices before coming to campus rather than bringing them inside to charge.
- Operate devices safely: Follow safe riding practices when using scooters, electric bicycles, skateboards and other devices. Be aware of your surroundings, follow traffic laws and use caution when traveling around campus. Additional safety tips can be found here.
- Follow residence hall guidelines: EMPVs are prohibited in University Residences and Dining buildings.
EMPVs found in violation of university regulations may be removed and/or ticketed.
