Tests of the PurdueALERT emergency warning notification system are planned for West Lafayette and Indianapolis on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 12 p.m. The tests will take place during Boiler Gold Rush (BGR), the university’s annual orientation program for incoming students.
West Lafayette
As part of the test in West Lafayette, the campus all-hazards outdoor emergency warning sirens will be activated, weather permitting. The test of the sirens will help students know what to listen for during a potential emergency. In an actual emergency, the sirens indicate to immediately seek shelter in the nearest building and gather more information.
The test in West Lafayette will also include text messaging, email, X updates (@PurdueALERT), digital signs, desktop pop-up alerts and Campus Emergency Status webpage updates.
Indianapolis
In Indianapolis, the PurdueALERT test will include text messaging, email, desktop-pop-ups, X updates (@PurdueALERT) and Campus Emergency Status webpage updates.
“It’s critical that students in both West Lafayette and Indianapolis know what to expect and how to respond before an emergency occurs,” said Jefferson Howells, director of Emergency Preparedness. “BGR provides an opportunity to conduct these tests as students are already familiarizing themselves with campus and learning to navigate their new environment.”
All students, faculty and staff at both locations are encouraged to sign up for emergency text message notifications. Up to three numbers may be registered.
