WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Friday (June 5) gave approval to plan, finance, construct and award construction contracts for classroom and office renovations to the Purdue Armory, a landmark facility that’s home to the university’s ROTC headquarters and other seasonal activities.
As part of the renovation, new mechanical and supporting equipment will be installed to serve the Armory’s two classrooms and offices on the first floor. New fan coils, ductwork, controls, piping and supporting electrical work will be included in the project. The classrooms served by the new mechanical equipment will be renovated to include new projection equipment, flooring, furniture and LED lighting.
Construction for the project is scheduled to start in May 2027 and be completed in August 2027. The renovation will be funded by operating funds.
The Purdue Armory and its large, field house-like space serves as a hub for the ROTC and related activities while over the years hosting events such as the annual Purdue Ag Fish Fry, high school robotics competitions and the staging venue for commencement ceremonies in nearby Elliott Hall of Music. The two-story facility includes the Tri-Service Hall of Fame, which recognizes Purdue alumni who have gone above and beyond in their military service.
Purdue’s original Military Hall was one of the university’s first buildings, opened in 1873 at the corner of University and Third streets. In 1908 a new armory was built near its current location to make room for a gymnasium at what today is Felix Haas Hall. But a fire on Feb. 24, 1916, destroyed the armory. When it was rebuilt at a $189,000 price tag and opened in 1918, the Armory housed the Army, Air Force and Navy ROTC battalion as well as classrooms, offices and a large drill deck shed complete with a rifle range.
