Established in 2001, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is committed to sending American students of limited financial means from all backgrounds to study abroad.
Committed to animal behavior and welfare, Kendyl Brown has a focused interest in learning how different cultures care for their animals. Selecting a departmental study abroad program in spring, Kendyl Brown seeks to understand how agricultural production methods influence animal welfare in Greece. Kendyl anticipates that her work experience in customer service will be an asset from adapting in new situations to communicating with Greek farmers, veterinarians, and students. Likewise, she will apply her research experience in animal science to analyze the connections between Greek and American agricultural systems and to compare different outcomes for animal welfare. Seeking to become a more well-rounded veterinary professional, Kendyl is motivated to study abroad and build relationships with her counterparts in Greece: “By comparing veterinary practices, animal care, and farming methods between the two countries, I will be able to initiate conversations that highlight the similarities and differences in how our societies care for animals. These discussions can foster mutual understanding and showcase how our shared interest in animal welfare transcends cultural boundaries.”
