Harrison Lippie joined the ranks of more than 400,000 Fulbrighters who have gone abroad to conduct research, study, or teach in one of 165 partner countries since 1946.

On the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright program, Harrison is making advances in biomass conversion research at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. While eyeing a Ph.D. program in chemical engineering, Harrison sees this research opportunity as an important step toward his professional aspirations to work in a US National Laboratory and contribute to international collaboration.

Beyond his research interests inside the laboratory, Harrison seeks to understand societal attitudes that have engendered both Germany’s Energiewende movement and it’s ranking as the world’s first major renewable energy economy. Whereas achieving a novice level of fluency required self-study and formal instruction through Purdue online courses, Harrison earlier established a strong foundation of cross-cultural communication skills through his participation in a five-term co-op in a Saudi company.

Reflecting on the value of this foundation, Harrison said, “I know advancing diverse relationships in this way is our best hope to continually create innovative and cohesive solutions for global challenges.” Having played the French horn in ensembles throughout his career at Purdue, Harrison plans to engage in the community of musicians who form the TU-Munich Chamber Orchestra, which is open to all students.
