Phillip Harter joins the ranks of more than 400,000 Fulbrighters who have gone abroad to conduct research, study, or teach in one of 165 partner countries since 1946.
On the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright program, Phillip headed to one of the smallest countries measured by geographic area, Luxembourg, which precisely for this reason offers a unique opportunity to conduct cancer research. In addition to receiving extensive federal support, the National Institute of Cancer has ties to most hospitals and medical research institution in Luxembourg.
Phillip has a personal connection to his career aspiration to develop new cancer therapies, which reduce toxic side effects, specifically in the field of pediatric oncology, because he has lived with the loss of smell since he received cancer treatment as a child. Indeed, he views this Fulbright research opportunity as the next step in his professional development as evidenced by his decision to defer enrollment in the MD/Ph.D. program of his choice.
An avid water polo athlete from the age of six years old, Phillip identified a local water polo club in Luxembourg, where he will exchange training techniques. In and out of the water, he plans to engage in community and learn about the historical roots of the Holy Roman Empire in this predominantly Catholic country.
