Purdue trustees approve new degree programs

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Friday (Dec. 6) approved two new degree programs: a Master of Science in defense engineering and technology, and a Ph.D. in aviation technology and management.

Trustees also approved the naming of the John Martinson Engineering Entrepreneurial Program and the Ray Ewry Sports Engineering Center in the College of Engineering.

The new M.S. in defense engineering and technology with a concentration in expeditionary warfare, is an interdisciplinary effort between the College of Engineering, Polytechnic Institute and Cranfield University, U.K., to provide a custom-created curriculum for the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division, Naval Sea Systems Command.

The program will consist of 13 courses, each of which will count for three credits at Purdue University. Six of the courses will be offered by Purdue faculty and six by Cranfield faculty. The 13th course will be a three-credit research class. The degree is being offered in a hybrid format at the Crane Westgate location in southern Indiana.

The Ph.D. in aviation technology and management program will be offered on the West Lafayette campus. It involves the study of all aspects of aviation from an air transportation perspective and will provide expanded opportunities for research as the need for faculty and staff programs preparing commercial pilots and aviation maintenance workers continues to grow. The program will be offered beginning in the fall of 2020.

The John Martinson Engineering Entrepreneurial Program supports the Purdue College of Engineering’s entrepreneurial activities and vision for an innovative-friendly ecosystem in the college and university. It will allow students and faculty to participate in activities that blend engineering, business and the creation of new companies. John H. Martinson is a 1971 graduate of Purdue’s Master of Aeronautics & Astronautics Engineering program.

The Ray Ewry Sports Engineering Center in the College of Engineering will advance research and learning benefits to athletes and students and use cutting-edge technology to reduce athletes’ injuries, improve performance and enhance fan experience. It is named for Ewry, an 1894 Purdue engineering graduate who won 10 Olympic medals and held the Olympic Games record for most gold medals won for more than 100 years.
