The Fulbright Program, the world’s most recognized and prestigious international exchange initiative, lists Purdue as a “dual top producer” of Fulbright faculty and student scholars for 2022-23. Purdue is one of only nine doctoral institutions in the country to receive this distinction, with the selection of 10 student scholars and six faculty scholars.

The annual list of top producers was published in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Chris Lukasik, Purdue professor of English and provost’s fellow for faculty Fulbright awards, says Purdue has been a top producer of faculty scholars for three of the past four years. But this is the first year Purdue has been recognized as a dual top producer of both faculty and student scholars.

“It’s great to see all of our hard work pay off,” says Lukasik. “To be one of only nine doctoral universities so honored is an impressive accomplishment for Purdue.”

Purdue’s 2022-23 faculty scholars and their awarded host institutions are:

  • Kathryn Seigfried-Spellar, associate professor in the department of computer and information technology, University of Valencia, Spain.
  • Zoltan Machaty, associate professor in the department of animal sciences, Sorbonne University, France.
  • Guillermo Paniagua Perez, professor of mechanical engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
  • Ivan Christov, associate professor of mechanical engineering, University of Nicosia, Cyprus.
  • Trevor Foley, senior director, international engagement and alumni travel at the Purdue for Life Foundation, The German American Fulbright Commission, Germany.
  • Alejandro Cuza-Blanco, professor in the school of language and cultures, Autonomous University of Queretaro, Mexico.

Lukasik encourages interested faculty to attend an upcoming information session about the U.S. Fulbright Faculty Award Program on Feb. 24 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Wilmeth Active Learning Center, Room 3138.

“Fulbright recipients often describe their experiences as life-changing, and their expanded world views make them better informed to speak to global issues upon their return to the United States,” he says. “Fulbright faculty are exceptionally well-prepared to speak to students who are not only entering into a global economy, but who belong to a generation that must confront a series of challenges – global in scale – such as climate change or food security.”

This year’s Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award deadline is Sept. 15, 2023. For more information on the Fulbright Faculty Award Program, contact Christopher Lukasik at clukasik@purdue.edu.
