Center for Advocacy, Response & Education to host events in April to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a national annual campaign to give a voice to survivors of sexual violence, to allow individuals to participate in education and prevention efforts, and to learn how as friends, family and a community to support survivors. Purdue’s Center for Advocacy, Response & Education, which provides confidential advocacy for Purdue students impacted by interpersonal violence, has planned several events for the Boilermaker community to participate in.
Throughout the month of April, CARE will be hosting three free workshops to allow students, faculty and staff to engage and learn about bystander intervention, interpersonal violence and supporting someone who discloses violence:
- Boiler Up & Intervene: April 5 at 4 p.m. in Krach Leadership Center, Room 260
- Power & Control: April 14 at noon in Krach Leadership Center, Room 260
- CARE-ing Support – Responding to Disclosures of Interpersonal Violence: April 20 at noon in Krach Leadership Center, Room 260.
These workshops are also offered to requesting organizations and courses on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus. Follow the Qualtrics link to sign up. Space is limited to 48.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month events will culminate with a Creative Arts Show on April 24, held on the Duhme Residence Hall lawn near the First Street entrance. Submissions will be on display from 1-7 p.m., with tabling resources, creative activities and live presentations between 5-7 p.m. Survivors and allies from the Boilermaker community are encouraged to share their stories and solidarity through different mediums, including but not limited to paint, watercolor, pencils, clay, spoken poetry and prose, photography, dance and music. Both individual and group artwork will be accepted.
Art pieces should be under 3 feet by 5 feet, and if the piece includes a respondent’s name, please omit the last name. If the piece includes triggering material, it will be placed in a designated tent to respect those who might be healing. This is not a professional art show, so no insurance is necessary.
