Faculty teaching and learning reading groups to focus on ‘Inclusive Teaching’

The Teaching Academy, Center for Instructional Excellence and Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging invite Purdue West Lafayette instructors to join Purdue’s faculty teaching and learning reading group in the Fall 2022 semester. The reading group brings together instructors from around campus in small groups to discuss how recent books about the classroom and teaching and learning may inform what they do.

For the fall semester, participants will read Kelly A. Hogan and Viji Sathy’s “Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the College Classroom.” The book, released in August, shares a framework and specific tips and strategies for creating classroom environments that enhance students’ feelings of inclusion toward the aim of creating more equitable learning outcomes.

Participants will read the book over three meetings throughout the fall semester to discuss the ideas, theories and application for this semester and in the future.

Participants can choose to meet in-person at 1:30-3 p.m. Thursdays (Oct. 6, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1) or virtually at 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Fridays (Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2).

Instructors who would like to participate during this fall should fill out an online questionnaire by Sept. 9 providing information about themselves and their availability.

Those who cannot make it this semester but are interested in faculty reading and learning communities or who have suggestions for future books/topics may contact Dan Guberman at dguberma@purdue.edu.

The faculty teaching and learning reading groups are part of Innovative Learning, Purdue West Lafayette’s hub approach to connect instructors to the resources they need to engage students, develop courses in any instructional modality and enhance learning across the University. Members include the Center for Instructional Excellence, Purdue University Libraries and the School of Information Studies, Purdue Online and Teaching and Learning Technologies.

There are opportunities for other parts of the Purdue system, as well.

Purdue Fort Wayne faculty and staff who are interested in similar topics can reach out to CELT at celt@pfw.edu to discuss upcoming workshops, specialized workshops, one-on-one course and learning activity development sessions, and certificate opportunities.
