Tree removals and new plantings in Academy Park begin today

Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana) trees that are invasive and diseased will be removed from Academy Park beginning today (May 16). The park is located north of Stewart Center and the Purdue Memorial Union.

New trees will be planted to help provide a healthy, diverse tree canopy that will be less susceptible to large-scale tree loss in the future. A mixture of shade and ornamental trees will provide flowers in the spring, coverage in the summer and color in the fall.

Intermittent sidewalk closures will occur through June 1 when the project is expected to be completed.

This project is part of the 1869 Tree Planting Master Plan. The plans calls for 3,738 trees to be planted by fiscal year 2025. The total number of trees was determined by doubling 1,869, which is the year Purdue was founded.
