New leader for civics literacy announced

The Office of the Provost has announced Fred Duttlinger as assistant director for civics literacy on the West Lafayette campus. He will report to Catherine Golden, assistant vice provost for academic initiatives, and will provide administrative leadership for the civics literacy graduation requirement, including oversight of the civics knowledge test implementation, communications with the greater campus community and regional campus partners.

Duttlinger, a 2005 Purdue alumnus, says he’s glad to be back on campus.

“This role provides the opportunity to do all the things I love -- from project management, communications, student engagement, and leadership -- all with the purpose of ensuring students understand civic fundamentals,” he says. “One of my first priorities is to implement a communications plan informing the university staff, faculty and students what civics literacy is, why it matters, and what it means to them.”

Duttlinger brings both administrative and student success experience to Purdue after holding leadership positions at Ivy Tech Community College and the United States Army. He received his bachelor’s degree from Purdue in political science and history and holds a master’s degree in history from Loyola University, Chicago.

In June 2021, the Purdue University Board of Trustees adopted a civics literacy graduation requirement for undergraduates, including all transfer students, on the West Lafayette campus who entered Purdue in the fall of 2021 or any subsequent semester. The regional campuses will implement the requirement starting in the fall of 2022.
