Butler Center to hold virtual workshop on gender bias and intersectionality

The Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence is inviting faculty, staff and students to a virtual workshop, “Gender Bias and Intersectionality – Basic Module” on April 8.

The workshop is based on this premise: Stereotypes and the biases on which they are based present a subtle but powerful obstacle for women and faculty of color in institutions of higher education. People are less likely to openly admit to negative stereotypes and biases today than in the past. Nevertheless, they remain powerful in this quieter form. Building on this, the workshop is a basic module that will enable discussing gender, intersectionality and bias to better understand each other, make interactions more meaningful and improve overall work-climate for all. Strategies to address bias, both individual and institutional, will be discussed.

This workshop will be conducted by Mangala Subramaniam, professor of sociology and Butler Chair and the center’s director, and Laura Zanotti, professor of anthropology. Facilitators at the workshop will be Ximena Bernal, associate professor of biological sciences, and Jennifer Freeman Marshall, associate professor of English and interdisciplinary studies.

This virtual live workshop session is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon April 8.

Workshop registration is required and available online.
