Butler Center to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8 with talk by pilot Amelia Rose Earhart
The Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence will celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8 with a talk by Amelia Rose Earhart on "Women of Tomorrow: What Sharing a Name with Amelia Mary Earhart Taught Me about Taking Flight."
Amelia Rose Earhart followed her namesake, aviation pioneer Amelia Mary Earhart, by becoming a pilot and pursuing her dream of flying around the globe. Though sharing names and dreams, the two are not related. To achieve her goal, Amelia Rose Earhart completed private, instrument and commercial pilot training and developed her own flight plan. She also crafted an entrepreneurial and strategic business plan to design, fund and market her around-the-world attempt, raising close to $2 million in partnerships with 28 corporations. In 2014, Amelia Rose Earhart flew a single-engine airplane, a Pilatus PC-12NG, 28,000 nautical miles to circumnavigate the globe.
Amelia Rose Earhart also founded the Fly With Amelia Foundation, which has sent numerous teenage girls to flight school.
Opening remarks will be made by Jay Akridge, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity. The virtual event, which is open to faculty, staff and students, is scheduled for noon-1:30 p.m. A video about the talk and registration are available online.
