Purdue community invited to participate in 'Exercise is Medicine Awareness Week'

The Department of Health and Kinesiology and the Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIMOC) committee will host "Exercise is Medicine Awareness Week" on Oct. 17-23. The week strives to promote physical activity and health awareness through a variety of events, including the Dean's Walk, Boiler Nation EIMOC Walking Challenge and the Charles Cowell Lecture.

Monday (Oct. 18)

  • Minute to Win It Challenge. Play slack cup, Frisbee and volleyball. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Memorial Mall.

Tuesday (Oct. 19)

  • Cookie Day. Pick up a free cookie at Lambert Fieldhouse.
  • Scavenger Hunt. 6 to 8 p.m. Slayter Hill.

Wednesday (Oct. 20)

  • The Dean's Walk. Take a vigorous one-mile walk through campus with Marion Underwood, dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences. Meet at 12:10 p.m. at the "Unfinished Block P" sculpture north of Stewart Center.
  • Boiler Nation EIMOC Walking Challenge. As part of Exercise Is Medicine Week, Purdue is participating in a one-day walking challenge against other EIM universities. All members of the Purdue community are encouraged to participate. Log walking mileage for the day online.
  • Charles Cowell Lecture. Nicole R. Keith, professor in the Department of Kinesiology and associate dean of faculty affairs in the School of Health & Human Sciences at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, will speak on "Weight Loss Disparities among Black and White Women: Twenty Years of Clinic Partnerships, Re­search Recruitment, Enrollment, Randomization, and Outcomes." 3:30 p.m. Lawson Computer Science Building, Room B151.

Thursday (Oct. 21)

  • Ladder ball, spike ball and games. Enjoy lawn games and competition. 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Centennial Mall.

Friday (Oct. 22)

  • Dog Walk. Walk a furry friend from Natalie's Second Chance Shelter or bring your own furry friend. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Memorial Mall.

Saturday (Oct. 23)

  • Family Day Activities. Youth sports challenge stations will be set up along with live demonstrations and education on exercises and techniques (such as foam rolling) to keep adults moving pain free. 12:30 p.m. Lambert Fieldhouse front lawn.
