International Programs offering grants for virtual study abroad efforts

Purdue’s International Programs is offering three grants for Purdue West Lafayette faculty and staff to encourage the development of new online courses or projects with international partners that intentionally plan for intercultural learning outcomes.

These grants are the Intercultural Pedagogy Grant (IPG), the Virtual Experiential Intercultural Learning (VEIL) grant and the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) grant.

* IPG. IPG supports faculty and staff in building new intercultural student learning experiences in virtual modalities. The experiences can be course-based or project-based programs. IPG is combinable with all other grants. Faculty and staff can apply for both a study abroad (SAIL) and a virtual international learning grant (COIL and VEIL), but not more than one grant for virtual experiences. Individuals who have previously received an IPG before 2020-21 also are invited to participate.

* VEIL. The VEIL grant will be offered to faculty and staff who are interested in creating new programs or in revising an existing course or project that incorporates virtual interactive opportunities for students enrolled in a Purdue course with students enrolled in an overseas institution. An accepted VEIL project requires virtual international peer interaction for students with at least 12 student participants, at least six being Purdue students. An IPG from last year or this year is required for participation.

* COIL. The COIL grant is intended to compensate faculty and staff for the greater time commitment in designing and facilitating a virtual international collaboration. This grant is offered to faculty and staff who are interested in creating either new or revised courses and projects. COIL courses must involve at least 20 students, at least 10 being from Purdue, but preference will be given to programs involving 20 or more Purdue students. An IPG from last year or this year is required for participation.

Faculty who previously received VEIL grants are still eligible with new COIL and VEIL projects. Previously supported VEIL courses and projects that are continuing may be eligible for ongoing support at a reduced rate.

For Fall 2021 COIL and VEIL programs that require IPG support through the summer, applications are being accepted until May 14. For winter, Spring, and Summer 2022 COIL and VEIL programs for which IPG training will take place in the fall, applications will be accepted from May 15 to Aug. 13. Funding will be disbursed upon completion of all program requirements including final report analyzing intercultural learning outcomes data. The IPG discretionary award is $2,000, a VEIL award will receive $2,000 and the COIL award is $4,000. Participants may apply to the IPG, VEIL and COIL using the Qualtrics survey.
