Butler Center, ACE-Women’s Network of Indiana to hold leadership conference, panel discussion

The second annual leadership conference of the ACE-Women’s Network of Indiana, co-sponsored by the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence, will be held on April 16 in a live virtual format. The conference, titled “Lead from Where You Are,” will provide faculty members in colleges and universities in Indiana to network with statewide higher education professionals and hear leadership lessons from senior women leaders.

As a precursor to the conference, a panel of deans will be featured in a session titled "Perspectives on Leadership" at noon-1:30 p.m. April 15.

ACE-Women’s Network of Indiana conference

  • Keynote address: Ashleigh Shelby Rosette, senior associate dean of Executive MBA and Non-Degree Programs, Fuqua School of Business, Duke University.
  • Concurrent panel sessions:
    • "The Courage to Lead: Inner Dimensions of Leadership" with Teresa Lubbers, Indiana commissioner for higher education, and Karen Schuster Webb, president, Union Institute & University.
    • "How to Mentor and Support Other Women" with Rose B. Bellanca, president and CEO, Washtenaw Community College, and Roslyn Clark Artis, president, Benedict College.
  • Conversation: "New Beginnings: Higher Education in the Biden Era" with Ted Mitchell, president, American Council on Education.

The conference is free (no registration fee) for faculty at Purdue. Registration link and additional information, including the conference schedule, is available on the conference website.

"Perspectives on Leadership" panel

Organized by the Butler Center, the "Perspectives on Leadership" panel session is structured as a conversation and will focus on leadership trajectories and the challenges and opportunities of being in a leadership position, both generally and in the current context of the pandemic and the visible protests for racial justice.

The panelists are:

  • Nancy Marchand-Martella, the Suzi and Dale Gallagher Dean of Education, Purdue University.
  • Linda Mason, dean, Graduate School, Purdue University.
  • Maureen A. McCarthy, dean, College of Sciences and Humanities and professor of psychological science, Ball State University.
  • Beth McNeil, dean of Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies, Purdue University.
  • Karen Plaut, the Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture, Purdue University.
  • Marion Underwood, dean, College of Health and Human Sciences, Purdue University.
  • Brooke Kandel-Cisco, dean, College of Education, Butler University.
  • Paaige Turner, dean, College of Communication, Information, and Media, Ball State University.

The moderator will be Mangala Subramaniam, professor and Butler Chair and director, Susan Bulkeley Center for Leadership Excellence. Subramaniam is the state co-director of ACE Women’s Network of Indiana.
