PURCE webinar to focus on economic hardship and voter behavior

The Purdue University Research Center in Economics (PURCE) webinar on Oct. 15 will focus on economic hardship and its effect on voter participation.

The webinar will feature W. Ben McCartney, PURCE faculty affiliate and assistant professor of finance at Purdue. McCartney will discuss the natural consequences -- increasing inequality -- and policy implications of the “have-nots” being unable to participate in the democratic processes of voting and shaping policy.

McCartney's data show that households economically distressed as a result of the housing and subsequent financial crisis in 2008-09 were less likely to vote in the 2010 elections. This likely shaped what policies were implemented following the election. McCartney's finding is detailed in a Review of Financial Studies research paper.

McCartney's primary fields of research interest are household finance, corporate finance and real estate, and he teaches courses in financial management and household finance.

The webinar will be held at 11 a.m.-11:45 a.m., and registration is available online. A Zoom link will be provided in the registration confirmation email.
