Tracy Hieatt, senior administrative assistant in the Honors College, has received the 2020 Eudoxia Girard Martin Memorial Staff Recognition Award.

The award was presented virtually by Bill Bell, vice president for human resources, during the December meeting of MaPSAC, the Management and Professional Staff Advisory Committee.

Hieatt (pronounced “Hyatt”), a Lafayette native, has accumulated 24 years of service at Purdue. In 2006, she joined the University Honors Program and helped it transform in 2013 into the Honors College. In her role, she supports four associate deans and 11 faculty members. She also is the Honors College schedule deputy and its liaison to ITaP and the Office of International Students and Scholars.

Hieatt was nominated by the Honors College faculty at large, and the nomination was submitted by Elizabeth Baker Brite, clinical associate professor in the college. During the virtual presentation, Brite said, “In speaking here, I represent the entire college. We’ve had discussions about our buildings and our learning style -- the architecture and programming that emphasizes closeness. Tracy has been foundational to making that work.”

The nomination spoke to the work atmosphere that Hieatt creates: “Ms. Hieatt’s office is a place where each of us is always welcome, and where we can find the support we need for our initiatives no matter how busy she may be.” That openness applies to every task, “from making purchases and organizing schedules to handling visa and residency requirements for international scholars.” In sum, “She is a crucial part of our team who has made the establishment of our college possible, and who continues to model excellence for us all in the day to day operations of our institution.”

In accepting the award, Hieatt expressed gratitude and said, “It really touched my heart. I feel like I’m just doing my job, doing my best every day.”

The Martin Award recognizes a full-time administrative assistant (S4 or grandfathered Op Tech) on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus. It is awarded to a staff member who demonstrates qualities of heart, mind and spirit that evince a love for and helpfulness to students, faculty and staff. It consists of a medallion, a framed description of the life of Eudoxia Girard Martin and a $1,000 honorarium.

The Martin Award is named in honor of Eudoxia Girard Martin, who lived in Lafayette from 1920 to 1977 and was executive secretary to the dean of engineering at Purdue for many years.
