Student-authored submissions sought for service-learning and international engagement journal

Proposals and articles are currently being accepted for consideration in the eighth volume of the Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement (PJSL).

Publication in the Fall 2021 issue of the journal requires proposals be received no later than Jan. 1, and complete article submissions no later than March 1. Submissions are made directly to the PJSL website. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis, and those received after the deadline will be considered for the following 2022 issue.

The Fall 2021 issue will feature two special sections:

Special section on service-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic

PJSL is seeking proposals for submissions that capture the challenges and innovations that have emerged from doing service-learning and community engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic. As students were brought home from study abroad engagement experiences and as student service-learning projects shifted to remote work, what were some of the challenges and impacts on students and partners? What service-learning activities emerged in response to COVID-19? What innovations or new knowledge were developed that enhanced service-learning for students? In what ways did students and communities benefit, despite what might be perceived as a major setback?

Special section on Black Lives Matter in service-learning

PJSL is seeking proposals for submissions that address racial diversity, equity and inclusion in service-learning. How have students used their academic training to engage as activists? How have movements like Black Lives Matter been enriched by student voices and academic perspectives? How has service-learning impacted students' personal development (e.g., racial identity development, awareness of systemic racism and racial privilege)? And, perhaps most important, how do Black lives matter in service-learning?

Submissions that address the intersections of COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter are encouraged, especially the ways that COVID-19 particularly illuminates systemic racial inequalities and the challenges and rewards of mobilizing for racial justice during a pandemic. For both sections, PJSL seeks to strongly amplify marginalized student and faculty voices in order to expand what service-learning is and can be.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to share this information with students interested in publishing an article, and are also encouraged to mentor a student writing an article.

Submission types include:

  • Reflective essay is a student-authored description of a community engagement project (3500 words).
  • Research with reflection is a student-authored research article that may be secondarily co-authored by a faculty member or community partner describing an engagement project using quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods research methodology (3500 words).
  • Community partner snapshot is a student-authored description of a community partner/organization and the service opportunities for students and faculty within the organization (1,000 words).
  • Faculty profile interview is a student-authored interview with a faculty member involved in service-learning and/or community engagement initiatives (1,500 words).
  • Community-inspired cover art is artwork, photography, digital design or other graphic illustrations that are inspired by community engagement, either at the local or international levels.
