Steps to Leaps initiative offering more virtual Lunch and Learn sessions for faculty and staff

The Steps to Leaps initiative will hold virtual Lunch and Learn sessions, free and focused on staff and faculty, in July.

The sessions will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on the following days:

Thursday, July 2 —Well-Being Discussion and Resources for Students Upon Their Return
Susan Prieto-Welch, director of Counseling and Psychological Services, who spoke earlier in this series about supported students amid the transition  to online learning and social distancing, will speak this time about the stresses of the coming fall semester, whether returning to campus or taking courses online, and deciding which to do. Prieto-Welch will be joined by Pam Aaltonen, professor emerita and a national leader on public health, to lead a discussion about what students will need this fall and how to provide appropriate support.

Tuesday, July 7 – Importance of Sleep for Well-Being
Elliot Friedman, Purdue’s William and Sally Berner Hanley Professor of Gerontology and an expert on sleep, will speak about the importance of sleep for well-being and effective ways of training yourself to sleep better. Joining Friedman will be a panel consisting of Louis Tay, the William C. Byham associate professor in industrial-organizational psychology; Renee Thomas, director of the Black Cultural Center; and Miranda Endres, residential advocacy and conduct coordinator in University Residences. The panel will begin with focus on students’ barriers to sufficient sleep and how to help them gain the benefits of adequate sleep.

Steps to Leaps is a collaborative effort to foster lifelong habits and promote a growth mindset in the areas of well-being, leadership, impact, network building and grit. Steps to Leaps offers goal setting, action planning, worksheets, short motivational videos and more for self-assessment or facilitator-led assessments to help students celebrate their strengths while learning paths to improvement. Steps to Leaps aligns student-led initiatives with expert research through the Provost Road Map for Transformative Undergraduate Education to help Boilermakers maximize their potential now and in the future.
