Two COVID-19 social science research discussions set for Friday, Monday

Purdue faculty are invited to join the Purdue COVID-19 Social Science Research Pop-Up Lab to connect virtually with colleagues across campus who want to explore emerging research topics around the social, political and economic implications of the current pandemic. The next sessions are scheduled for Friday (May 1) and Monday (May 4).

Friday’s discussion, set for 11 a.m.-noon, is on “Mathematical Modeling, Estimation, and Analysis of Epidemics Spreading on Networks.” It will be led by Philip Pare, assistant professor, and Shreyas Sundaram, associate professor, both from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Individual participants who want to join a team to further explore a session’s topic should follow up with the discussion leader. Those interested faculty will be invited to join a Microsoft Teams group, where discussions and planning on next steps for organizing systematic inquiry on the topic can be developed.

Faculty will attend through WebEx (meeting number: 610 589 031; event password: 3trXsawkp27).

The second upcoming COVID-19 Social Science Pop-up Lab session will be held on Monday (May 4). "Economic Implications of  COVID-19" will be explored in a public webinar hosted by the Purdue University Research Center in Economics. The Facebook Live event will be at 8 p.m. and can be found at the link provided.

The panel of Krannert economics faculty experts discussing impacts of the pandemic are Tim Bond, associate professor, on labor and unemployment; Jillian Carr, assistant professor, on crime implications related to the virus; and Tim Moore, associate professor, on COVID-related health economics.

Subsequent COVID-19 Social Science Pop-up Lab sessions will be on Friday mornings. To submit a topic, convene a session, or get more information, email CLADean@Purdue.edu.
