Recap of University Senate’s Jan. 27 meeting

Here is a recap of the University Senate’s meeting on Jan. 27. Minutes from the meeting will be posted on the Senate website closer to the next Senate meeting on Feb. 17.

Menstrual care products in restrooms. Audrey Ruple, chair of the Equity and Diversity Committee, presented a resolution for discussion to offer free menstrual products in University bathrooms across Purdue’s West Lafayette campus. The resolution will be voted on at the Feb. 17 meeting.

Diversity statements. Ruple presented a resolution encouraging the University to require new faculty applicants to submit a diversity statement as part of their application, regardless of the college or administrative unit they are applying to. The resolution will be voted on at the Feb. 17 meeting.

Basic needs. Ruple presented a resolution recommending that the University include a basic needs statement in the course syllabus template that instructors could choose to include in their own syllabi. The statement urges students to contact the Office of the Dean of Students if they face challenges securing food or housing and believe it may affect their performance in the course. Senators voted to suspend the rules so they could vote on the matter after a discussion. Senators passed the resolution.

Gender marker options. Ruple presented a resolution recommending non-binary gender markers, such as “X,” be placed on all physical and electronic University forms that request gender identification be made. The resolution will be voted on at the Feb. 17 meeting.

Elections Procedures Inquiry Committee. During the new business portion of the meeting, senators approved a motion to have the newly formed Election Procedures Inquiry Committee report to the Faculty Affairs Committee.

Libraries update. Beth McNeil, dean of Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies, provided an update on journal subscriptions and the Spring 2020 review process, which includes reviewing cost and use for subscriptions. The presentation can be viewed here.
