Campus community invited to participate in RecycleMania

Purdue once again is competing in RecycleMania, a recycling competition between universities and colleges across the United States and Canada. This is Purdue’s 10th consecutive year competing.

The contest began Sunday (Feb. 2) and runs through March 28. During that time, universities and colleges work to increase campus recycling and improve waste reduction efforts. At the West Lafayette campus, Physical Facilities asks that students, faculty and staff get involved.

“We are encouraging the entire campus community to participate in this fun, friendly competition, even if it’s something as minor as placing trash and recyclables in the proper receptacle or becoming more familiar with what is actually recyclable,” says Michael Gulich, director of campus planning and sustainability and university architect. “The goal is to keep the momentum going long after the competition ends.”

Last year, Purdue placed fourth out of 43 in the electronics recycling category and ranked 17th out of 149 in Food Organics, a category that recognizes schools working to reduce food waste through activities, donation and biofuels. Other categories include Diversion and Per Capita, which focus on diverting waste from the landfill and increasing the recycling rate on campus.

There will be another electronics recycling drive for this year’s competition. A date and location will be announced in the coming weeks.

A list of recyclable items is available online. Questions about the competition can be directed to the Campus Planning and Sustainability unit at 765-494-2481 or sustainability@purdue.edu. More information about RecycleMania and results from previous years can be found at www.recyclemania.org.
