Purdue’s 2019 United Way campaign kicked off Wednesday (Sept. 11) with the goal of raising $800,000 for local agencies. The campaign ends Nov. 20.

David Reingold, the Justin S. Morrill Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, is this year’s campaign chair. Gary Bertoline, dean of the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, is the vice chair. At the kickoff event, Reingold told volunteers what inspired him to chair this year’s campaign.

“Whether it is providing food, youth development, adult instruction or housing to address chronic unmet need or acute assistance for those facing an unexpected tragedy, United Way agencies offer an array of services that help individuals and families within our community surmount the challenges they face,” Reingold said. “I am mindful that none of us can anticipate the moments when we will need the assistance of others. They happen more frequently than we might realize and our well-being sometimes depends on events outside of our control.”

This year, posters from previous campaigns over the last 25 years will be for sale for $5 while supplies last. To purchase a poster, contact Megan Eberly, director of Purdue United Way, at meberly@purdue.edu or 765-494-9240.

John Sautter, senior advisor for the Purdue Alumni Association, started the annual poster tradition and spoke at the kickoff about what the Purdue United Way Campaign has meant to him over the years.

“I started the concept of the United Way posters 25 years ago as a way to unify the campus community, to keep them mindful of United Way's purpose,” Sautter said. “Just as we on campus help students by providing resources to create hope, encouragement and eventually confidence to be successful so should we do the same for those in need in our Greater Lafayette community. Nobody makes it alone.”

The ePledge online pledge system continues this year. Donors can donate an unrestricted gift to the United Way of Greater Lafayette or can choose a specific UWGL agency for their donations. Gifts can be made through payroll deduction or as a one-time donation. For credit card transactions, the United Way of Greater Lafayette contracts with CyberSource, a trusted name in e-commerce meeting industry security standards.

A link to donate and more information about the United Way Campaign and the Purdue Alumni Association's September Month of Service can be found on the Purdue United Way website. Questions about the campaign can be directed to Eberly.
