Fall schedule of family-friendly workshops now available

Human Resources is offering family-friendly workshops, bringing in local experts to present a variety of topics geared toward parents and caregivers. Workshops are open to parents or caregivers with children of all ages.

Those attending are encouraged to bring lunch to eat while listening to the presentation. Time for asking questions and networking with other parents and caregivers will be offered.

Being a Caregiver
Aug. 21 (W). Noon-1 p.m. Purdue Memorial Union, Room 263AB.

The goal of this workshop is to present information on community resources and help participants recognize the importance of self-care. Who becomes a caregiver? Why do people become caregivers? What should you be concerned about? Are there supports for caregivers in this community? This session will answer those questions and more. This workshop will be presented by Elizabeth Matheson, licensed clinical social worker, Valley Oaks Health Community Living Program.

Dementia or Not?
Sept. 10 (Tu). Noon-1 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 204.

This session will cover the signs and symptoms of dementia as well as discuss appropriate next steps if dementia is suspected. This workshop will be presented by Jiayun Xu, assistant professor of nursing.

Play With Your Food: Making Nutrition Fun for Kids
Sept. 26 (Th). Noon-1 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 311.

Kids learn through play, and food is no exception. Caregivers want kids to be healthy, but it can be a struggle to get them to try nutritious foods. Learn how to incorporate new foods in a fun way and watch meal times become easier. This workshop will be presented by Amber Noll, extension educator.

Investing Confidently
Oct. 8 (Tu). Noon-1 p.m. Purdue Memorial Union, Room 263AB.

This workshop will help you look at your investments and understand how to build a long-term investment plan you can feel confident about. This workshop will be presented by Tosin Ratchford, dedicated retirement planner, Fidelity Investments.

End of Life Care
Oct. 23 (W). Noon-1 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 218C.

End-of-life conversations can be very difficult and uncomfortable, and oftentimes people may not know where to start. Families often wait until the last minute to have these conversations -- or never have them. This can lead to very traumatic and stressful decision making for a loved one, without knowing what their wishes are. The goal of this workshop is to help participants build confidence in beginning or continuing conversations about end-of-life wishes, whether about their own wishes or with a loved one they are helping care for. This workshop will be presented by Jiayun Xu, assistant professor of nursing, and Nadine Cline, inpatient palliative care nurse practitioner, IU Health Arnett.

Aging Well
Oct. 29 (Tu). Noon-1 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 311.

Aging well is a choice for most people, and it’s always the right time to choose health. Learn about small changes that can be made today related to nutrition, physical fitness and emotional wellness that will help you age well. This workshop will be presented by Amber Noll, extension educator.

Individuals can register online at www.healthyboiler.com by clicking on "Wellness Events"; workshops will be titled as listed above. Participants may register up to the day before the workshop offering. Limited seats are available.
