Purdue welcomes new Indian Emerging Scholars to campus

During a recent meet-and-greet session, Suresh Garimella, executive vice president for research and partnerships, welcomed four new Indian Emerging Scholars to Purdue.

Together with last year’s cohort, Garimella congratulated the new students and conversed with them about the many academic and extracurricular activities at the University, encouraging them to make the most of the plethora of options Purdue and Greater Lafayette have to offer.

In comments to the group, Garimella highlighted the diversity of this year’s cohort of four students, studying four different disciplines in four different colleges. He also praised scholarship founder Venu Srinivasan, Purdue alumnus and chairman and managing director of TVS Motors, for making this opportunity possible.

“The Indian Emerging Scholar Fund is an example of how committed alumni have come together to support the university and, in this case, help Purdue offer an extra incentive to attract the best and brightest students to the University across a variety of disciplines,” Garimella said.

In 2016, Srinivasan created the Indian Emerging Scholar Fund in order to attract high-achieving prospective undergraduate students from India to Purdue. Since that time, committed alumni have further increased the fund. The selection process is overseen by the dean of international programs at Purdue. The Indian Emerging Scholar Fund currently offers a limited number of renewable partial scholarships, payable in rupees to the students’ Indian bank accounts.
