Bicyclists on the West Lafayette campus may notice campus path bike connectivity significantly increased over the summer.

As part of the State Street Redevelopment Project, more than 20,000 linear feet of new bicycle-pedestrian shared use paths and new designated cycle track was constructed. This additional infrastructure was added primarily along Stadium Avenue between Northwestern Avenue and McCormick Road and along State Street from the Levee area east of campus to U.S. 231. The additional bicycle infrastructure enhances safety by separating bicycles and vehicles in these high-traffic areas. As shown in the photo, signage has been posted to help direct bicycles and pedestrians.

The amount of bicycle infrastructure has increased significantly over the last couple of years, and bicycle usage and other metrics will be tracked this fall to inform discussions about future enhancements.

Members of the campus community who do not own their own bike have the opportunity to rent one from Purdue’s ongoing bike share program. Purdue is still in partnership with Zagster, but the company rebranded its bicycles to reflect the Pace name. With this change, new bicycles are located at various stations on campus and nearby areas. The bicycles can be parked at any bike rack on campus for rider convenience. Pay-as-you-go pricing is offered in addition to monthly memberships.

Individuals who had a Zagster membership will be able to continue using the new bicycles by downloading the Pace app on their smartphone, and all other terms of the service agreement will remain the same through the contract period. Upon completion of their current contract, users will have the opportunity to select a Pace plan or pay-per-ride.

Those who purchase a Pace membership will have access to use any Pace bicycle in the world at no extra cost, including those at other college campuses and cities.
