CILMAR to host Scaling Up: Institute on Intercultural Learning and Mentoring

The Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research is hosting on Feb. 22 and 23 the first Scaling Up: Institute on Intercultural Learning and Mentoring.

Staff and their guests will share best practices for making the campus a safe space for intercultural learning and mentoring, embedding intercultural learning into the classroom, collaborating with multicultural colleagues, increasing the impact of intercultural learning in the co-curricular space and increasing the effectiveness of study abroad through mentoring. The intent is that attendees will come away with inspiration, resources, networking connections, instruction and solidarity with peers.

The cost of the event is $100 for Purdue faculty and staff and $150 for faculty and staff from other institutions, and includes two breakfasts, one lunch, a networking reception and all materials and sessions. Attendees may register here. Space is limited.

Feb. 22 highlights

* Keynote speech from R. Michael Paige, professor emeritus of international and intercultural education in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development at the University of Minnesota.

* Discussion on overcoming resistance.

* Breakout sessions covering practicum on reflective assignments as publishable data and icebreakers that teach.

* Dialogue on diversity and intercultural learning.

* Practicum on mindfulness as an intercultural learning skill.

* Breakout sessions on outcomes of a mentoring program for faculty and co-creating interculturally adept advisors and co-curricular program leaders.

* Networking reception and discussion with corporate partners on intercultural learning skills needed for success in the workplace.

Feb. 23 highlights

* Discussion on intercultural assessment instruments.

* Breakout small group workshops covering the logic model for incorporating intercultural learning in the strategic plan, learning interventions (denial and polarization) and learning interventions that focus on social justice, inclusion and diversity.

International experiences are one of the Purdue Moves initiatives for transformative education.

The Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research is a unit of International Programs and is housed in the Office of the Dean of International Programs.
