United Way campaign getting boost from events by staff, faculty

Purdue employees at the West Lafayette campus are continuing to organize fundraising events for the United Way, having begun as far back as June.

More information about the 2016 Purdue United Way Campaign, which will continue through Nov. 16, is at www.purdue.edu/unitedway.

Events in progress or to come

* The College of Education is hosting a silent auction featuring both fun and practical items for bidding. Items are being added regularly. The auction is online at https://discover.education.purdue.edu/auction/Default.aspx?dept=1 and closes at 5 p.m. Oct. 30.

* ITaP is hosting a Bake Sale on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 13-14) at several buildings -- the Mathematical Sciences Building; Young Hall; Humanities, Social Science and Education Library in Stewart Center; and South Campus Court on the campus, and Ross Enterprise Center in Purdue Research Park.

* Veterinary Medicine will host a Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Decorated pumpkins are due by noon Monday (Oct. 17) in Lynn Hall, Room 2178. Voting buckets will be placed in five areas of Lynn Hall for easier voting: Rooms 1352, 2178, 1344, 101 and 1185. A $1 donation per bucket. All pumpkins will be on display Oct. 18-20 in the Continuum Café in Lynn Hall.

* Chemistry will host a “Scary-In” Halloween Fest including a Chili Cook-Off and Costume Contest on Oct. 21 (department only; not public). 

* Marketing and Media is waging penny wars for the period Oct. 4-21.

* Zumbathon for United Way will be at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Córdova Recreational Sports Center, Feature Gym. All are welcome to participate; a $5 donation is suggested. Open to all; membership at the center is not required.

* Student Life is hosting a spooky walking tour at 7-11 p.m. Oct. 28, visiting campus sites of true events from Purdue’s rich history. Tours run every 30 minutes and will start from the west lobby in Stewart Center. A donation of $5 is admission for the tour. Tickets can be purchased by texting FRIGHTNIGHT to 41444, where a link will direct patrons to a website.

* Veterinary Medicine is hosting Puppy Cuddles for United Way at 1-3 p.m. Nov. 2 at Lynn Hall in the courtyard near .Continuum Café.

Completed events

* A Purdue United Way Team competed Aug. 27 in the Tippy Connect Corporate Challenge, an athletic competition of eight different games promoting employee wellness, company camaraderie and business networking to benefit the United Way of Greater Lafayette. A check for $3,041 was presented to Old National Bank for its United Way campaign. The event was at McAllister Recreation Center.

* Two groups each had a fundraiser with the Pink Walrus Frozen Yogurt truck -- Marketing and Media on June 29 and Capital Program Management on Sept. 28.

* A Splash or Cash Challenge for United Way took place Sept. 16 at Loeb Fountain in Founders Park, raising more than $1,200 for the Purdue United Way Campaign. Purdue United Way organized the event, and students from the Purdue Sales and Marketing Association helped coordinate it.

* Cupcakes for a Cause, hosted by the Enrollment Management and Financial Aid teams, took place Sept. 28 in front of Schleman Hall.

* The Bursar’s Office hosted a bake sale on Friday (Oct. 7) in Hovde Hall.

* Members of the Leadership and Organizational Development unit within Human Resources volunteered at the Food Finders warehouse  on Sept. 26.

* Members of the Organizational Effectiveness unit within Human Resources volunteered at the Lafayette Transitional Housing Center on Sept. 30. The group organized the center's donation room.
