Child Wellness Day aims to help grad students' kids

Registration has opened for Purdue graduate students with children to take part Oct. 28 in Child Wellness Day, led by the School of Nursing, North Central Nursing Clinics and Purdue Graduate Student Government. The children can receive medical exams, important health screenings and vaccines, and their parents can learn health and nutrition facts,

Child Wellness Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nursing Center for Family Health in Lyles-Porter Hall. Students in several Purdue programs will provide services at no cost:

* Pediatric nurse practitioner students will provide physical examinations.

* Undergraduate and graduate nursing students will assist staff from the Tippecanoe Health Department with lead and hemoglobin screenings as well as immunizations.

* Nutrition science students will offer nutritional counseling and education.

* Hearing screenings will be available for all children (10 a.m.-2 p.m.).

* Pharmacy students will have pediatric medication information on hand for parents.

Parents should bring their child's insurance card, if any, and vaccination record. Parents can register their children for Child Wellness Day at www.training.purdue.edu/childwellness. It asks parents to select an appointment time for each child, and links to several forms are on that page also.

Parking is available all day in the Harrison Street Parking Garage adjacent to Lyles-Porter Hall, and the need for an "A" permit has been waived for the day. Also, a van will provide a ride from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with pickup at PVCC and Lyles-Porter Hall each half-hour. Users will need to provide car seats. CityBus (route 27) also is available.
