Search committee formed to find new dean of the College of Science

Deba Dutta, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity, has announced the start of a national search for the next dean of Purdue's College of Science.

"The college is known for its long tradition of excellence in research, education and societal impact. Our investments in computer science, drug discovery and the life sciences have positioned the college to be a leader in fundamental research," Dutta says.

Dutta encourages input and assistance from all faculty and staff to create a diverse pool from which candidates will be selected for campus visits.

Co-chairs of the dean search advisory committee are Jay Akridge, the Glenn W. Sample Dean of Purdue Agriculture, and Ei-ichi Negishi, the Herbert C. Brown Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and 2010 Nobel laureate in chemistry. The co-chairs will provide details on the process and communication protocols for faculty and staff.

Craig Svensson, dean of the College of Pharmacy, is serving as interim dean of the College of Science.

Members of the search advisory committee:

* Jay Akridge, the Glenn W. Sample Dean of Purdue Agriculture (co-chair).

* Ei-ichi Negishi, the Herbert C. Brown Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and 2010 Nobel laureate in chemistry (co-chair).

* Celeste Bottorff, vice president, Hire Dynamics (member, Dean's Leadership Council).

* Marc Caffee, associate department head and professor of physics and astronomy.

* Supriyo Datta, the Duncan Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

* James Fleet, Distinguished Professor of Nutrition Science.

* Ananth Grama, professor of computer science.

* Courtney Henry, graduate research assistant.

* Christine Hrycyna, associate head of teaching and undergraduate education, Department of Chemistry, and professor of chemistry.

* Constance Kaspar Brophy, assistant director of science diversity.

* Ralph Kaufmann, professor of mathematics.

* Maureen McCann, professor of biological sciences and director of Discovery Park's Energy Center.

* Jay Melosh, Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Physics.

* Jorge Rodriguez, associate professor of physics.

* Herman Sintim, Drug Discovery Professor of Chemistry.

* Andrea Spahn-McGraw, director of advancement, College of Science.

* Wojciech Szpankowski, the Saul Rosen Distinguished Professor of Computer Science.

* Elizabeth Taparowsky, associate dean for research and graduate education, College of Science, and professor of biological sciences.

* Mark Ward, associate professor of statistics.

* Hao Zhang, department head and professor of statistics.

The search advisory committee will be assisted by Michele Flemming, executive recruiter, Human Resources.
