Crossroads Conference on Communicative Disorders set for Oct. 24-25

The Crossroads Conference on Communicative Disorders on Oct. 24-25 will offer insight into hearing loss, literacy, swallowing disorders and other subjects related to speech and hearing.

The event, which will be held at Stewart Center, is presented by the Purdue chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association and Student Academy of Audiology. The conference is open to professionals and students in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and related fields.

Conference sessions and speakers are:

* "Pediatric Feeding/Swallowing Problems: Let's Figure it Out!" with Maureen Lefton-Greif, associate professor in the Departments of Pediatrics, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

* "Genetics, Hearing Loss, and Developmental Outcomes" with Luis Escobar, medical director of the Medical Genetics and Neurodevelopmental Center at Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St. Vincent Health Care Services.

* "Intervention for Grammatical Deficits in Children: A New Look at Input" with Laurence Leonard, the Rachel E. Stark Distinguished Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Purdue, and Pat Deevy, research associate in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Purdue.

* "Effects of Hearing Loss on Learning New Information" with Andrea Pittman, associate professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at Arizona State University.

* "A Night at the Movies 'The Way We Talk'" with filmmaker Michael Turner.

* "Integration of Respiration and Deglutition: Function, Disorders & Treatment" with Bonnie Martin-Harris, the Alice Gabrielle Twight Professor in the Roxelyn and Richard Pepper Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and associate dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Communication at Northwestern University.

* "It's All about Word Study: A Multi-linguistic Approach to Literacy Instruction" with Kenn Apel, professor and chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of South Carolina.

* "Message Banking Options for Adults with ALS" with Michelle Gutmann, clinical associate professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Purdue.

*"Effects of Hearing Loss on Learning New Information" with Andrea Pittman, associate professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at Arizona State University.

Registration information is available online. The full registration fee for the conference is $235. A one-day registration fee is $145, and the student fee is $25.
