Affordable Care Act requires dependent Social Security numbers for medical coverage

Human Resources will send direct emails to employees who have dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan but do not have dependent Social Security numbers on record. The email is being sent in accordance with the Affordable Care Act -- also known as Health Care Reform -- which requires employers to send dependent Social Security numbers to the IRS, along with their medical election.

Employers must make three good-faith efforts to gather this information. If an employee’s dependent does not have an SSN, they may disregard the message.
