Nancy Hathaway has joined Purdue's Human Research Projection Program (HRPP) as IRB administrator.

An attorney with substantial expertise in human research subject protection ethics, regulations, policy development and compliance assessment, Hathaway has overseen U.S. Army headquarters-level research involving human subjects conducted or supported by the Department of the Army. She also has supervised the development and management of human research protection programs and institutional review boards (IRBs) for regional hospitals and academic medical centers, international nongovernmental organizations focused on health care delivery and infectious disease prevention in developing countries, and the U.S. Army; and she has overseen development of guidance documents and educational programs. Hathaway also founded the startup company Jewell Laboratories, which is focused on the development of therapeutic interventions for rare diseases.

The HRPP has three main functions: to ensure that Purdue research complies with federal regulations and institutional policies; to ensure that the research is grounded in ethical principles; and to foster an environment conducive to the development and growth of young investigators and supportive of senior investigators. "In short, the HRPP is central to all matters pertaining to the welfare of human research subjects and the investigators under whose watch these studies are undertaken," Hathaway says.

Hathaway, who arrived after the rollout of Coeus-Lite for IRB online submission systems, says that her top priority is to integrate the tool into the research review process for investigators and the IRB.

Hathaway invites faculty and staff to visit the HRPP during walk-in hours in Young Hall, Room 1032:

* Monday 9:30-11:30 a.m.
* Tuesday: 2-4 p.m.
* Thursday: 9:30-11:30 a.m.
