Healthy Boiler workshop to explore impact of alcohol consumption on mental, physical health

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and to help individuals learn more about the topic, a Healthy Boiler workshop titled “Sip Smart: Navigating Alcohol Awareness” will be held from noon to 1 p.m. ET April 25.

Presented by Center for Healthy Living employees Whitney Soto, RN health coach, and Jessica McKeever, registered dietitian, the workshop aims to increase awareness about the impact of alcohol consumption on both physical and mental health.

“It is a well-known fact that alcohol has an impact on various organs and cellular processes within our body,” Soto said. “The brain is one area that is affected almost immediately after consumption. We are at a higher risk for accidents, impulsiveness and poor decision-making after mild to moderate alcohol intake. The higher the blood alcohol content someone has, the worse these symptoms may be.”

Workshop topics will include additional information on metabolizing alcohol, binge drinking and drinking in moderation, along with “mocktail” recipe ideas. The workshop supports the behavioral health and physical health pillars of the Healthy Boiler Program.

Those interested in attending should register by April 24 via the Healthy Boiler Portal. The registration link can be found under the “Healthy Boiler Workshops” section on the portal’s home page. Hover over the workshop’s square and hit “Submit” to register.

Healthy Boiler workshops are free to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff and dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan.
