Integrative Data Science Initiative launches new undergraduate certificate

As part of Purdue's Integrative Data Science Initiative, a new “Applications in Data Science” undergraduate certificate has been launched to provide an opportunity for all Purdue students to gain foundational knowledge of data science that they may use in different application domains.

Students who earn this certificate will have a foundation in statistical, mathematical and computational techniques for the analysis of large-scale or complex datasets and will apply their skills to different areas. They will be able to interpret results from large-scale data analysis and communicate findings, and they will recognize and evaluate ethical and social implications of data science.

“We are very excited to be presenting this updated program to Purdue students,” says Peristera Paschou, associate professor of biological sciences, associate dean for online and graduate education in the College of Science and co-chair of the Integrative Data Science Initiative Curriculum Committee. “The Applications in Data Science undergraduate certificate is part of the effort to build a 'Data Science for All' curriculum at Purdue. Our goal is to empower students with data science tools and understanding and help them move from being passive consumers of conclusions about data to making informed data-driven decisions.”

The Integrative Data Science Curriculum Committee, which includes one representative from every college, was created as a governance structure for this program and as a forum for discussion and interaction on data science-related curriculum matters across Purdue.
