Charles Cowell Lecture to discuss musculoskeletal research

Lynda Bonewald, founding director of the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health at the IU School of Medicine, will speak at 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 30) in Neil Armstrong Hall, Room B071.
Her talk, titled “The Muscle Metabolite, b-aminoisobutyric acid, L-BAIBA, Enhances the Effects of Exercise,” is a part of the Charles Cowell Lecture. The lecture series is organized by the Department of Health and Kinesiology. She will discuss current and future musculoskeletal research and provide ways to improve one’s musculoskeletal health.
Bonewald, who is professor of anatomy, cell biology, and physiology, and of orthopaedic surgery, received her doctorate in immunology/microbiology from the Medical University of South Carolina. She studies osteocytes and has developed tools used by researchers to determine osteocyte biology and function. Her current research is focused on bone to muscle crosstalk with aging. She is a past-president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities.
