Purdue rises to No. 79 globally, improves to No. 32 in the U.S. in latest Times Higher Education rankings
Purdue remained the best globally ranked university in Indiana and the only one in the top 100
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University’s research prowess and enhanced global reputation continue to earn recognition. Purdue rose to No. 79 globally and No. 32 in the U.S. in the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, released Wednesday (Oct. 9). Improving seven spots worldwide from the 2024 rankings, Purdue also matched an all-time high by coming in at No. 13 among all U.S. public universities.
Purdue was the only university in Indiana to be ranked in the top 100 globally and top 50 domestically, while also earning a No. 8 standing among public land-grant institutions.
“Purdue’s continued rise in rankings directly reflects our aspiration to be the most consequential public university in the U.S., powered by the efforts of our faculty, staff and students,” said Patrick Wolfe, provost and chief academic officer. “The impact of our research, teaching and industry engagement continues to grow, and in doing so advances our land-grant mission substantially.”
The World University Rankings are produced annually by Times Higher Education and have been compiled since 2004. The 2025 edition ranked 2,092 institutions worldwide using 18 calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across areas such as teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.
Purdue’s scores continued to increase in nearly all indicators with the most impactful improvement in the areas of research environment and research quality. Purdue also received its highest score ever for research income, an indicator measuring the funding received. Research strength, research excellence and research influence, three indicators introduced last year, also reached record highs.
This global recognition from Times Higher Education is the latest among several impressive accolades that Purdue has garnered over the last year:
- Purdue placed No. 1 among U.S. public universities and was named the No. 9 most recognized university in the world in the 2024-25 Global University Visibility (GUV) rankings.
- Purdue was recognized, in another global ranking, among the world’s best and No. 8 among public universities by Quacquarelli Symonds in the latest QS World University Rankings.
- For the second year in a row, Purdue placed fifth internationally and in the top four for U.S. universities in U.S. patents received.
