A video featuring Peter Bermel, the Elmore Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, has been uploaded to the AP Video Hub.

In this video, he explains what microelectronics are (small electronic circuits), what they are used for and how this technology will continue to grow. All videos in the Campus Insights series are free for download and use by all AP members and can be found at apvideohub.ap.org or by doing a general search on the Associated Press site. AP members may use the video or to pull quotes for print article or for broadcast or podcast.

STORYLINE

Recent supply chain issues have led to a chip shortage. Why has this been so impactful? Bermel says that microelectronics are found in things people use every day, including smartphones, cars and aircraft. These microelectronics are also critical to national security. Global positioning systems (GPS), military vehicles and communication networks all utilize this technology. Bermel predicts that there will be many areas of growth within microelectronics, especially in entertainment and communication. He also explains the differences between semiconductors, microchips and microelectronics.
